Growing local to build food security

One of the many things the Covid-19 crisis has highlighted is that it’s more important than ever to grow local produce. Pandemic-related lockdowns and travel restrictions have disrupted food chain supplies and affected communities around the globe.

So much so that the World Bank says the effects of the pandemic have “led to severe and widespread increases in global food insecurity, affecting vulnerable households in almost every country, with impacts expected to continue into 2022 and possibly beyond.”

At Vegtech Netafim, we believe commercial greenhouses can play a vital and sustainable role in building food security. And we’re passionate about helping local growers increase their production while reducing the risks associated with traditional farming.

Growing all year round

In a climate-controlled and protected greenhouse environment, farmers can create ideal growing conditions for their crops – not just in traditional growing seasons but throughout the year. And with this increase in crop growing cycles, farmers can provide a near-constant supply of fresh local produce for local markets.

Growing more with less

Farmers can produce more food in greenhouses compared to open field growing – and improve the quality of their produce too. They’re also able to reduce their use of water and fertiliser by up to 40% with systems that deliver the exact amounts of nutrients and water their crops need, when they need it.

Growing close to home

Greenhouses can be built close to local markets (avoiding rotting and waste) or wherever fresh produce is needed. Not only does this improve food security but it has several additional benefits for consumers and the environment. As Netafim’s Global Agronomy Director, Dubi Raz, explains, local produce is often pesticide-and preservative-free as it doesn’t have to be transported over long distances – a ‘food miles’ reduction that is better for the environment. He also mentions that it’s easier to determine where local produce originated, how it was produced, and whether it’s been organically and sustainably grown.

Let’s grow together

Vegtech Netafim has partnered with farmers on a range of large-scale greenhouse projects in more than 25 African countries, and we remain committed to helping build sustainable local food production across the continent.
